Another Protected Bike Lane Is Coming To Whitehall Street

Even more bike lane improvements are coming to the neighborhood in time for peak biking season: The Department of Transportation is installing new measures this month that will improve bike safety and attempt to tame car traffic on Whitehall Street from Morris Street to Water Street.

The plan, set to be implemented by the end of this month, will install what’s called a “contraflow” protected bike lane on the stretch of street — that’s a bike lane that goes against the flow of traffic, but is protected by a barrier. The DOT is also adding shared-lane markings on the street, adding wayfinding signage for cyclists riding to the Battery Park Greenway and updating parking regulations along the corridor.

All this should be done in time by May, which happens to be National Bike Month.
