At last, the much-anticipated Socceroof location in Lower Manhattan is open at 28 Liberty St. And not only is the downtown outpost an incredible sports facility, Socceroof — which also has locations in Sunset Park, Crown Heights and Long Island City — is a creative use of previously underutilized office space. Though with green as far as the eye can see, the space doesn’t feel much like an office anymore.
Head below street level and you’ll find Socceroof Wall Street, a vast athletic facility with all the fixings. The main draw here, of course, are the soccer fields — four turf fields, designed for five-on-five or seven-on-seven matches — and they do not disappoint. Each turf field is built atop a layer of sand for shock absorption and surrounded by nets and sturdy plexiglass. Strategic (and skilled) players can bounce the ball off of the glass during gameplay, adding a fun dimension to the game. If you’re looking to score some points with your boss via your Messi-inspired moves, Socceroof Wall Street welcomes corporate teams to take the field. But even if you can’t rally a group of colleagues to come with you, you can still stop by solo and join a pickup game. Pickup games involve three teams of seven, rotating every six minutes so everyone gets plenty of play time.
In addition to the turf fields, the space also has a lounge with a full bar and food offerings. Other amenities include TVs for viewing parties, an immersive sound system to make you feel like a real pro as you take the field and designated areas for private events. It’s a versatile spot, able to host pickup games, corporate events, youth camps and parties — and that’s just for starters.
Though the team at Socceroof anticipates post-work crowds, they’ve also developed plenty of programming for kids. There are a wide variety of camps, classes and private coaching sessions available for soccer-loving kids. And when it comes time for that soccer-loving kid’s birthday, Socceroof is ready to host a party. Let the kids run around for a couple hours and then nosh on menu items, like hot dogs and pizza — perfect post-soccer foods, if you ask us.
We’d recommend scoring some time on the fields now while the newest location gets up and running, because it’s sure to get busy soon.
