10 Women-Owned Businesses to Frequent All Month Long
Even though we should be celebrating women 365 days of the year, Women’s History Month is an extra-special time to celebrate the women and women-owned businesses in your life.
If you live or work in Lower Manhattan, then that’s a fairly simple task. Here, below Chambers Street, you’ll find an abundance of restaurants and retailers operated by some amazing women. The following are merely 10 places where to drop some coinage for (at least) the next few weeks.
Tajin
For something spicy, don’t hesitate to order up a spread from Tajin (85 Greenwich St.). Owner Dolores Cordova taunts her Instagram followers with all sorts of good munchies. Most recently: the beef nacho platter.
Fresh Salt
Craft beers, interesting wines and tasty bar bites and sandwiches round out the menu at local favorite Fresh Salt (146 Beekman St.), where Sara Williams has has owned and operated in the Seaport since 2004.
Malibu Farm
Outside of owning a successful chain of restaurants, Helene Henderson has maintained that her ethos is simple for her farm-to-table eatery Malibu Farm (89 South St.). “Skip on a farm, bask in the sun and eat delicious food,” she said in a recent interview. The Seaport location has a bounty of fresh options on its all-day menu, ranging from pink shrimp tacos and spaghetti squash lasagna, to coconut ceviche and sesame-crusted salmon.
Art to Ware
Celebrating the spirit of creative reuse with women- and minority-owned fashion brands, Lesley Ware’s socially-conscious shop (21 Greenwich Ave., inside the Oculus) features unique garments and accessories made from up-cycled materials.
Wattle Cafe
Wattle Cafe (19 Rector St.) is owned by Australia native Ana Ivkosic, who has kept this lovely independent spot going and going. Try their superfood waffles with a cup of any of their first-rate coffee blends.
Goldish
Pick up some cool pieces at this unique jewelry boutique (71 Murray St.), where mother-daughter Yafit and Tyler Goldfarbcurate meaningful talismans, as well as arty home furnishings.
Martin Busch Jewelers
Longtime independent jewelry shop Marvin Busch Jewelers (85 John St.) — run by Martin’s great niece Eva Busch — offers an array of top-shelf options at all price ranges, plus original designs and watch repairs.
Thread
There are already five perfectly legitimate reasons to spend your lunch break at this Thread (140 Nassau St.). You want a sixth? This month, know that you’re also supporting Sadia Brangan’s salon by simply popping in for a relaxing facial.
Blue Park Kitchen
Fast-casual bowls are everywhere in the neighborhood, yet Kelly Fitzpatrick’s dishes at Blue Park Kitchen (70 Pine St.) are always a reliable option for a healthy and satisfying lunch. Customize them any which way — same goes for group orders — and Fitzpatrick’s team will abide.
Ryan Maguire’s
Mena Maguire always provides a welcoming ambience and an extensive menu at Ryan Maguire’s (28 Cliff St.). Offerings vary from wings and burgers to their tried and true shepherd’s pie. At the very least, you gotta try the breakfast sandwich on their brunch menu (Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
