Screenwriter Lu Wei, often referred to as “China’s top screenwriter,” is the mastermind behind the initial drafts and storylines of some of the most iconic films in Chinese cinema, including “Farewell My Concubine,” “To Live,” “Qin Song,” “Shuangqi Zhen Daoke,” and “Red Cherry.” Despite his instrumental contributions to these films, Lu Wei has remained relatively unknown to the general public. However, with the recent publication of his memoir, “The Secrets of Film Screenwriting,” Lu Wei sheds light on his creative process and the behind-the-scenes work that went into the making of some of China’s most beloved films. In this memoir, Lu Wei specifically delves into the adaptation process of “Farewell My Concubine” and “To Live,” offering a unique insight into the creative process of two of the most significant films in Chinese cinema. The Renwen Society will present an interview on April 22 with Mr. Lu by Mr. Woody Mu to talk about his views, aspirations, and wishes regarding Chinese cinema, and discuss the current issues of Chinese cinema.
