The American architect and sculptor Maya Lin became famous when, as a college student in 1981, her anonymous entry won the competition to design the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C.! She has since won many awards for her work in designing memorials and exploring environmental themes through sculpture and land art. Celebrating Women’s History Month, we’ll learn more about Maya through a read-aloud of Maya Lin: Artist-Architect of Light and Lines by Jeanne Walker Harvey. Then, incorporating similar themes of nature and world peace, we will create collages of our own, envisioning landscapes we would want to design someday! Recommended for ages 6+.
