For years, the Falcon Cam at 55 Water St. provided us with the greatest joy: baby falcon season. But for the last few years, the wild peregrine falcon who nests atop the skyscraper yielded zero live births, likely due to her advanced maternal age. Such is the circle of life, but last month a miracle happened: an egg hatched! And now, a fluffy baby bird is the star of the cam:

The New York Times reports that the baby falcon hatched sometime in mid-April, to the surprise and delight of bird watchers across the city (and everyone in the Downtown Alliance office). Unfortunately, our fuzzy prince or princess is a touch hard to see, thanks to 55 Water’s smudgy camera — the building says they’re hoping to send a bird expert up to clean the lens and tag the sweet baby, but for now they can’t disturb the birds. Smudges aside, you can still make out our new hatchling as they navigate this brave new world with their mother, and embrace the miracle of life for one more blessed season.
