Charge Up, Courtesy of the Sun

07/10/2014

Finding a spot to charge your phone is not always as easy as it should be. Now, at locations throughout Lower Manhattan, you can charge your phone or mobile device for free. Who supplies the electricity? The sun!

The Downtown Alliance has partnered with AT&T to set up 10 solar-powered charging stations.  The units work day or night, in sun or shade. During the day, three solar panels collect the sun’s energy to charge up powerful internal batteries. This enables the AT&T Street Charge (#ATTStreetCharge) unit to power up phones, tablets, and other devices as quickly as a wall, even when the sun isn’t shining.

The City’s departments of Parks, Transportation and the Economic Development Corporation provided critical cooperation to make this program possible.

The Street Charge Units can be found at:

1. Water/Whitehall Plaza

2. Coenties Slip Plaza

3. Old Slip Park

4 & 5. Mannahatta Park

6. East River Esplanade

7. Pier 15

8. Bowling Green Park

9. South Street Seaport (outside the TKTS booth)

10. Elizabeth H. Berger Plaza
