Three China Institute Events to Wrap Up the Year of the Dragon
The Gregorian calendar has already rolled into 2025, but the Chinese calendar doesn’t reset until the end of January. ‘Til then, stop by the China Institute in America at 40 Rector St. for these three January events — and be sure to snag a ticket for the China Institute’s Lunar New Year celebration on February 2. Hoppy Rabbit Playdate
January 19 // 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. // free
For this monthly event, the China Institute opens its classrooms to families for a freeplay session, where children and their caretakers can play, socialize and learn more about Chinese language and culture. The institute provides toys, crayons, picture books and other supplies; the event is geared toward children ages one to four.
Calligraphy and Music Meetup
January 17 // 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. // $10
This two-hour monthly event invites you to explore Chinese music and the art of calligraphy. A master calligrapher will work with you as you practice Chinese calligraphy, all while listening to live traditional Chinese music. Refreshments, including tea, will be provided, along with ink, paper and a brush.
Between Jobs — Joe Wong Stand Up English Comedy
January 24 // 6 p.m.– 8:30 p.m. // General admission $50
Trailblazing Chinese American comedian Joe Wong has appeared on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” blending Eastern and Western comedic traditions and bridging cultural divide for a variety of audiences.
