Conwell Coffee Hall Is a Sinfully Good Addition to Downtown’s Caffeine Scene

Fans of good coffee and Art Deco masterpieces are in for a real treat: Conwell Coffee Hall, Lower Manhattan’s newest caffeine hub, is now serving up tasty espresso beverages and excellent bites in one of the neighborhood’s most beautiful buildings. 

This expansive new coffee hall has taken over the former bank lobby at 20 Exchange Place (enter at 6 Hanover St.), and the space has everything: sky-high ceilings, ornate Art Deco molding, and a gorgeous marbled teller counter that now doubles as a coffee bar, backed by a spectacular Diego Rivera-esque centerpiece mural. Food and drinks wise, the devil’s in the details here. Conwell Coffee Hall serves custom blends from Gillies Coffee Company, America’s oldest coffee merchant, with a full range of espresso drinks as well as matcha lattes and teas. 

The food menu is exceptional, with a focus on New York classics with a twist; think elevated bacon-egg-and-cheeses, salmon roe-dotted cream cheese and lox toasts, and one of the best wedge salads you’ll ever have. There are breakfast pastries and dishes available for early risers as well, and cocktails, wine and beer in the evening hours.

Conwell Coffee Hall is a delightful place to stop by and hang out. You can sip coffees and eat small bites while chatting with pals at library lamp-lit tables and pretend you’ve time-traveled back several decades. Indeed, it feels like a place where magic just might happen.
