With the group stage finished and the knock-out stages underway, we’re coming to the serious part of the World Cup. If you’re looking for somewhere downtown to watch the latest European power get sent toppling to the metaphorical canvas, you have a couple of new options.
Conwell Coffee & Cocktail Hall (6 Hanover St.) will stream every one of the tournament’s remaining matches via an impressive 15-foot screen in the venue’s Great Hall. The free screenings will feature cinema-grade sound, with food and cocktails available.
Meanwhile, the Brooklyn Bridge Arches Plaza — the space beneath the Brooklyn Bridge that’s also known as Gotham Park — will host a free viewing of the quarter final scheduled for Friday, July 10.
The participants in this match are still to be determined, but it’s in the USA’s segment of the bracket, and with their victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina, they have their sights set firmly on this match. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves—first they have to negotiate a tricky Round of 16 tie with Belgium. If they emerge victorious from that game, their most likely opponents are Spain—but with established powers toppling left, right and center, it’s hard to say for sure. Whatever the case, this could well be the place to be on July 10.
Head to Rose Street between Avenue of the Finest and Frankfort Street for the festivities, which kick off at 2 p.m.; seating will be available, but you can also bring your own chair or blanket. No glass bottles or alcoholic beverages permitted.
