New Yorkers Are Required To Wear Masks When Outside, Cuomo Says

Starting Friday, April 17, a new executive order from Governor Cuomo will take effect — requiring that New Yorkers cover their noses and mouths “when out in public and in situations where social distancing cannot be maintained.”

“If you are riding on public transit where it is impossible to maintain social distancing, or walking on a busy sidewalk,” Cuomo said, “you must wear a face covering, like a bandana or a mask.”

Meanwhile, during a conference call on Wednesday, Mayor de Blasio offered guidance to groceries and supermarkets that they should require shoppers to wear masks. De Blasio emphasized that stores should understand they “have a right to have those rules in place” and that any customers who are not wearing masks “should not be allowed in.”

“This will help everyone to remember when they’re in that kind of space,” the mayor said. “It’s so important to protect each other.”

Of course, Cuomo’s executive order and de Blasio’s new guidance do not mean that everyone should run out and buy much-needed personal protective equipment (PPE). Medical-industry-grade face coverings, such as N95 masks, surgical masks and the like, should be directed to front-line workers in need.

Luckily, you don’t need the skills of MacGyver or even MacGruber to slap on a bandanna or dish towel to help keep yourself and others safe from the spread of COVID-19.

Remember to wash your masks, ad-hoc or otherwise, often. And if you’re wearing disposable masks, make sure to throw them where they belong when you’re done with them.
