Delmonico’s Is Now Taking Reservations
A memo to aficionados of the fine-dining world: It is time to break out the martini shakers, for Delmonico’s (56 Beaver St.) is readying its reopening for Friday, September 15. Indeed, after a years-long hiatus since the height of the pandemic, America’s first restaurant is once again taking reservations.
“It was the first to use the term ‘restaurant,’” operator Dennis Turcinovic explained to amNY, “the first to have a cookbook and the first to serve women sitting at their own table. We are excited to welcome back returning guests, but also introduce Delmonico’s to a new generation of New York City diners.”
Alliance staffers recently caught a sneak peek at the space’s elegant redesign — still faithful to the 187-year-old restaurant that fans know and love — while eagerly anticipating chef Edward J. Hong’s menu. Items include all the extravagant a la carte selections as well as signature throwback dishes such as several prime cuts of steak, baked Alaska, lobster Newburg and sea urchin.
“I’m excited to enrich Delmonico’s dining experience by introducing the option of new global flavors and techniques while also celebrating its classic dishes,” Hong told amNY.
Earlier this year, Eater reported heavily on the incessant legal battles that kept the establishment closed for so long, but history buffs will more likely gravitate toward the restaurant’s archival scoops: Among many historic figures, Delmonico’s was frequented by Mark Twain and Charles Dickens, and also served as the location of pivotal meetings between individuals like Charles Darwin and philosopher Herbert Spencer. Who knows, maybe some of that genius will impart on you while you’re feasting!
