Reminder: New Rules for Setting Out Trash Begin November 12

If you’re a property owner or manager, big changes are coming to how the city disposes of trash as part of its ongoing war on rats.

Beginning on November 12, all properties with one to nine residential units will be required to use bins (55 gallons or less) with secure lids to set out trash. For now, you can use a compliant bin (55 gallons or less with a secure lid) that you already have, but starting in June, you will be required to use an official NYC Bin.

You can purchase a NYC Bin at www.bins.nyc or by calling 1-855-NYC-BINS. DSNY will also retrofit or replace hundreds of collection trucks, adding mechanical tipping arms compatible with the new bins. This upgrade will speed up collection and minimize the possibility of spills that occur with manual collection.

NYC Bins are also available to order for recycling and composting, although they are not required. Curbside Composting is now mandatory citywide. Set out your leaf and yard waste, food scraps and food-soiled paper in bins (55 gallons or less) with secure lids and labeled as compost. Extra leaf and yard waste can be put in paper lawn and leaf bags or clear plastic bags. Brown bins are available for purchase at www.bins.nyc.
