The holidays aren’t only for family time. Whether you’re headed out of town or have plans with relatives on actual Thanksgiving (and we’ve got suggestions!), getting together for Friendsgiving in the days or week ahead is a fun way to connect with pals and make your own traditions. Here are a few ideas for how to celebrate in Lower Manhattan, from gathering fixings for easy hosting at home, to picnicking at the park, to simply meeting up at the bar or pairing indoor fun with your eats.
If you want to host
Having friends over to your place? For a flavorful nosh fest (and an easier lift than cooking a full turkey feast), source fresh and delicious fixings at Fulton Stall Market at the Seaport. You’ll find produce, cheeses and humanely raised meats from New York State farmers, as well as Hudson River Valley-produced hard ciders and ready-to-eat prepared sides like quiches, soups and veggies.
If you want to hang at a bar
Perhaps you’d like to skip the cooking part altogether and dedicate Friendsgiving to a quality hang, without any prep or dirty dishes whatsoever. If that’s the case, your best bet is to meet up with pals at Stout NYC, where you can gorge on wings and burgers over beers. It’s arguably the true American feast.
If you’re up for a picnic
November is that in-between time weather-wise, where some days are positively frigid, but others are perfectly manageable, particularly when the sun’s out. Take advantage of the last gasp of good weather with a picnic while you can still stand to be outdoors, convening at Battery Park or a quick ferry ride away at Governors Island. Our rec: pick up paninis from Pisillo and pie from Squires Diner or sweet treats from Sift Bakery. Done.
If you’re feeling active
If you want to stay warm indoors but keep the blood pumping, we have a few ideas for delicious eats paired with light activity. Have a banya day at Wall St. Bath and Spa 88, where you can enjoy a swim, steam and sauna, followed by decadent Russian food and infused vodkas. Convene at Gunbae for a Korean feast, then belt out your favorites in one of their private karaoke rooms. Or, engage in a little friendly competition at Lawn Club, where you can match up in curling, croquet or bocce over cocktails and bar food. These activities are fun, festive and food-heavy — a perfect way to enjoy the holidays with your favorite people.
