Young sailors will have the chance to develop their skills this summer by attending Harbor Camp, a sailing access and educational program. This unique summer program brings children aboard the tall ship Clipper City, a replica of a historic cargo schooner from 1854. During the five-day camp, students will learn basic safety skills, how to tie knots, how to raise or trim sails, how to navigate the harbor and even a bit of history about New York’s iconic waterfront.
The camp is skippered by Ewa Berton, in partnership with Manhattan by Sail. “The idea reprises a program that we used to run in partnership with the Waterfront Alliance, which operated through 2019,” she told the Broadsheet. “Kids come into our sailing program nervous, but they leave transformed.”
Harbor Camp will run for two one-week sessions in the last two weeks of August, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday through Friday. Sailors between the ages of 8 and 12 are welcome to come aboard. The camp costs $975 per child, per week. However, 30 percent of the seats will be discounted or free, based on need. The maximum capacity for each week is 20 students, so sign up ASAP to ensure your spot. For more information and to sign up, visit the website.
