Hip-Hop’s 50th Birthday Party Continues at Hall des Lumières

The celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary is still hopping in Lower Manhattan, with the most recent festivities underway at Hall des Lumières (49 Chambers St.). The interactive art center has hosted digital installations ranging in subjects from art nouveau to intergalactic space, and is now taking on the music world — specifically, the Bronx-born and -bred soundtrack of the streets with the new exhibition “Hip Hop Til Infinity: An Immersive Trip Across 50 Years.”

Visitors will be transported through hip-hop’s different eras and regions, from skate parks to the stage to the metaverse. Expect to see important moments in hip-hop history represented through state-of-the-art audio-visual technology. 

In addition to the main event, the exhibition will also feature interactive programming, including virtual concerts, live panels, listening parties, artist meet-and-greets and more — details to be announced.

The exhibit opens on August 2. Tickets are $45 each. 

Hall des Lumières isn’t the only place in the neighborhood that’s ringing in hip-hop’s big birthday. At the Seaport, Photoville’s art series “Hip Hop at 50 by Janette Beckman” displays several iconic portraits of rap trailblazers like Run DMC, Slick Rick, Salt-N-Pepa, Grandmaster Flash and LL Cool J in the storefront windows on the corner of Fulton and Front streets (22 Fulton St.). The exhibition runs through October 31.
