Celebrate spooky season with an evening screening of “Cloverfield” (2008) and watch a fictional disaster unfold in Lower Manhattan (if you dare…).
On Tuesday, October 13, we’re thrilled to bring the groundbreaking “Cloverfield,” written by Drew Goddard and directed by Matt Reeves, to Lower Manhattan for a special screening at Alamo Drafthouse (28 Liberty St.). What starts as a rooftop going-away party in Manhattan devolves into chaos when the skyline suddenly erupts. Found-footage horror meets a wild monster chase as a group of friends trek through New York City while it collapses around them.
“Cloverfield” combines a massive monster disaster with an intimate, handheld found-footage perspective to take the viewer into an unusually personal view of a blockbuster disaster.
After the screening, stay for a talkback session featuring film experts Michael Gingold, a renowned horror journalist and author known for his long-standing association with Fangoria magazine and his books on horror film history, and Madeleine Koestner, an NYC-based writer and film programmer, and founder of a horror-centric movie theater opening in Brooklyn this fall.
Our experts will unpack the film’s themes and its unique place in horror cinema, exploring the ways in which “Cloverfield” diverges from typical disaster narratives, the found-footage subgenre, and how “Cloverfield”serves as an allegory for 9/11.
Tickets are $5 and include popcorn and a beverage. All proceeds will be donated to the Wildlife Conservation Society.
Please note that seating is not assigned and seats will be chosen on a first come, first served basis. The screening runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; grab your ticket here.
