New York on Film Screening: “I Am Not Your Negro” With Dagmawi Woubshet
LM Live’s New York on Film screening series returns with the award-winning 2016 documentary “I Am Not Your Negro.” Join us at Alamo Drafthouse (28 Liberty St.) on February 22 for a profound exploration of race, power and American history through the lens of the incomparable author and essayist James Baldwin. A prophetic and passionate voice in the history of American letters, Baldwin’s powerful words illuminate much about our present circumstance. Immerse yourself in the poetic and thought-provoking narrative crafted from Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript, where he reflects on the lives and assassinations of three of his close friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr.
Post-screening, stay with us for an engaging talkback session featuring Professor Dagmawi Woubshet, an esteemed scholar, writer and translator who has focused on Baldwin in his career and whose work broadly lies at the intersection of African American, LGBTQIA+ and African studies. The conversation will navigate through the film’s compelling themes, dissecting the layers of Baldwin’s insights and their implications for our contemporary understanding of race, equality and social justice.
The screening will take place from 6 p.m. through 9 p.m. Tickets, which you can purchase here, are $5 and include popcorn and a beverage. All proceeds will be donated to Philabundance.
