Meow Wolf Is Finally Opening an East Coast Location, and It’s Coming to Lower Manhattan

New Yorkers’ FOMO about one of the coolest interactive art experiences in the world is about to come to an end, and it’s happening at the Seaport.

Meow Wolf — which operates colorful, sprawling, climbable, explorable, trippy art spaces around the country — announced at the SXSW conference in March that it will open its first New York City location in the coming years. The location will be a 75,000-square-foot space across multiple floors of the Seaport’s Pier 17.

The attraction is expected to draw millions of visitors to the Seaport at its projected 2028 opening date.

“This is going to be the most ambitiously creative Meow Wolf we’ve ever done,” Meow Wolf CEO Jose Tolosa told Gothamist

The company started as a DIY art collective in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2008 and spread to other installations in Texas, Colorado and Las Vegas, with a Los Angeles location set to open next year. The Seaport location will not only be New York City’s chance to join in on the fun; it will be the first location on the entire East Coast. Its exhibits often go viral on social media, including the famous washing machine slide

Gothamist points out that “immersive” experiences have become increasingly common in the city in recent years, but Meow Wolf is one beloved by artists and creatives worldwide.

“Meow Wolf’s unique approach to storytelling through art, and support of local artists, is perfectly aligned with the Seaport’s history as a hub for creative invention and artistry in New York City,” Anton Nikodemus, CEO of Seaport Entertainment Group, said in a statement. “Locals and visitors alike will enjoy Meow Wolf’s immersive experience in the coming years, giving them even more reasons to spend a day, evening, or both at the Seaport.”

2028 is a ways away, but hey — something to look forward to!
