Purim, the most joyous Jewish holiday, is on March 2 and March 3 this year. And to get the party going, the Chabad Jewish Center of FiDi (10 Cliff St.) has a number of events worth checking out.
First, some background info: Purim marks the historic saving of the Jewish population of Persia from annihilation at the hands of court official Haman. To celebrate, Jewish people read the Book of Esther, wear costumes and as a bonus, drink a lot (responsibly!). Basically, it’s a big party. Here’s what’s on the Chabad calendar:
- Thursday, February 26, 7:30 p.m. — Women’s Hamantash Bake
- Monday, March 2, 6:30 p.m. — Young Adult Purim Bash
- Tuesday, March 3, 11:30 a.m. — Purim at Southbridge
- Tuesday, March 3, 1 p.m. — Purim in One Hour
- Tuesday, March 3rd, 4:30 p.m. — Community Purim at the Stadium (Kid-centric)
- Friday, March 6, 6 p.m. — Purim Shabbat Dinner
If you’ve only got time for one or two events, the Young Adult Purim Bash — which is geared towards people in their 20s and 30s and features an all-you-can-eat sushi buffet and an open bar on the rooftop of the Hyatt Centric Wall Street New York — and the family-friendly Purim at the Stadium events are not to be missed.
In addition to Purim events, the Chabad Jewish Center of FiDi is a go-to downtown destination for Jewish holidays, Shabbat, young adult and children’s programming, and more. Learn about the organization here.
