Why trek to Queens for the U.S. Open when you can have a honeydew cocktail and enjoy some tennis right here in Lower Manhattan? There are multiple courts where you can work on your backhand, watch the balls whiz back and forth, and cool off with a refreshing sipper. Here are three spots where you’ll want to book some court time.
Seaport Racquet Club
Ever walked around the Seaport wishing there was a tennis court in the middle of all the action? You’re in luck. The Seaport will be transformed with the temporary installation of a tennis court located at 89 South St from August 19 through September 7. As part of this special pop-up event, anyone can head over and grab a free play time slot for 30 minutes. No need to bring your own racket or tennis balls — just grab your partner (or find one at the court). Chase Sapphire Reserve cardmembers can also sign up for perks like professionally-led clinics and an exclusive Racquet Magazine launch party. More information about the open play schedule and other Seaport Racquet Club events can be found here.
10th Annual Brookfield Place Open
Across the island, another tennis court will pop up in honor of the U.S. Open. The waterfront plaza at Brookfield Place (230 Vesey St.) will transform into a tennis court, which will host the Brookfield Place Open Tenant Tennis Tournament as well as open court play for the public. Reservations for open court play have already sold out, but walk-ons can be accommodated when space is available. After your match, you can stop by the Tartinery Shack on the terrace for a Honeydew Cooler made with honeydew juice, soda water, lime juice and fresh mint. Alternatively, you can rehydrate at Sixpoint Brewery with a Peach Melon Ball Spritz made with vodka, peach nectar, melon liquor, simple syrup, lemon juice, and champagne. More information about the 10th Annual Brookfield Place Open can be found here.
Court 16
You can’t talk about tennis in Lower Manhattan without talking about Court 16 (28 Liberty St.). This year-round indoor tennis facility has classes — including private, semi-private and group classes — for both kids and adults looking to improve their game. The space features four 44-foot courts, ball machines, and knowledgeable staff to help you nail your serve. And if you decide you prefer a slightly different ball sport, they also have pickleball courts available. More information on classes and memberships can be found here.
