Castle Clinton National Monument

Built on an island to defend the harbor in the War of 1812, Castle Clinton was later joined to Battery Park by landfill. It has served as a garden, an opera house, an immigration center and an aquarium. Today, restored as a national monument, tickets for Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty may be purchased here.
