Overview

Initially placed in Zuccotti Park back in 1982, "Double Check" was moved to the northwest corner of Liberty Street and Broadway in 2018. John Seward Johnson II's bronze sculpture of a seated man checking his briefcase includes details of everyday items, like a tape recorder and calculator. On September 11, 2001, the businessman's lifelike posture remained visible and upright under debris from the World Trade Center collapse. That day, first responders repeatedly approached "Double Check," mistaking the sculpture for a business man searching through his belongings. After some refurbishing, the artist left some of the sustained damage and added a plaque memorializing the tragic events. The plaque states that the "everyman" seated on the bench is now a "survivor," bearing imperfections as a "reminder of hope and endurance for us all."
