Sunken Garden, by Isamu Noguchi

Overview

“Sunken Garden” can be seen from two vantage points: above 28 Liberty's Fosun Plaza or through floor-to-ceiling glass windows from inside the publicly accessible Chase Bank branch, one level below ground. The piece features natural elements collected from the Uji River in artist Isamu Noguchi's native Japan. The seven black boulders are placed on a sloping white brick base, which turns into a water fountain during the summer months. In winter, the space remains dry. Similar to Zen meditation gardens, this space is meant to be seen from the outside or above, but never entered.
