Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Overview
Located at the plaza at 55 Water Street, a granite reflecting fountain and glass wall made up a somber and respectful memorial for veterans of the Vietnam War. Designed by Peter Wormser, William Fellows, and Joseph Ferrandino, silver plaques on two rows of granite blocks bear the names of 1,741 fallen New York veterans, and written reflections from soldiers’ diaries and letters home are etched into the glass wall. The memorial was first dedicated by Mayor Ed Koch on May 4, 1985. It was rededicated by Mayor Rudy Giuliani on November 9, 2001 following a $7 million restoration and the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.
