Downtown Alliance, Community Board 1 Sponsor Green Around Downtown: Community Planting Day 2008

Lower Manhattan residents will plant more than 500 annuals and perennials as part of Green Around Downtown: Community Planting Day 2008. The Alliance for Downtown New York and Community Board 1 are launching this annual event to build community spirit among Downtown residents and beautify the area.

The Downtown Alliance and Community Board 1 encourage local volunteers, children and their families to assist in greening Wall Street Park, one of the city’s newest and most treasured pocket parks. The volunteers will be charged with a variety of horticultural tasks including cleaning, raising and improving the existing soil in planting areas and planting annuals and assorted perennials throughout the park.

The organizations will provide planting tools, on-site instruction and assistance to the volunteers. They will also provide cedar mulch and compost, as well as 80 potted annuals for the fountain area, 260 annuals for the birch tree area and 200 assorted perennials for the rest of the park.

In addition, Downtown Alliance and Community Board 1 will provide a dedicated space for children to plant seeds in individual grow pots that they can take home after the event.

The organizations will provide volunteers with refreshments throughout the event, as well as free commemorative t-shirts while supplies last. The event is part of the Downtown Alliance’s "Going Green Downtown" initiative. For more information, visit www.downtownny.com/GoingGreen.
