There’s Still Time to Gather Your Old Docs and e-Waste Ahead of Our Spring Shred-a-thon

Instead of dumping your old W2s and computer monitors in the trash (don’t do that!), bag ‘em up and take them over to Fulton Street between Ryders Alley and Cliff Street this Sunday, April 14 for the Downtown Alliance’s annual Spring Shred-a-thon and e-Waste Event.

There, you’ll find a mobile shredding truck ready to securely destroy and recycle all sensitive documents, tax receipts and old bills from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until the truck is filled. It looks like it’s going to be lovely out — come hang!

For e-waste disposal, you can bring the following:

  • Computers (laptops, desktops, servers, mainframes)
  • Monitors (CRT and flatscreen)
  • Handheld devices (smartphones, tablets, MP3 players, e-readers)
  • Network devices (routers, hubs, modems)
  • Peripherals (keyboards, mice, cables, cords, chargers)
  • Components (hard drives, CD-ROMs, circuit boards, power supplies)
  • Printers under 50 pounds, scanners, fax machines
  • TVs
  • VCRs, DVRs, DVD and Blu-ray players
  • Digital converter boxes, cable/satellite receivers
  • Video-game consoles and accessories
  • Cell phones, pagers, PDAs
  • Audiovisual equipment (cameras, microphones, stereo equipment, etc.)

We cannot accept home appliances such as microwaves, humidifiers and dehumidifiers, refrigerators, air conditioners or ionization smoke detectors/carbon monoxide detectors (those that are labeled as containing radioactive material); batteries, except lead-acid batteries from uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems, and media like floppy disks, CDs, VHS tapes and cassette tapes are also not accepted.

For additional e-waste questions you can check out the LES Ecology Center’s FAQ. For other items that require disposal, use the Department of Sanitation’s How to Get Rid of… tool, or check out our comprehensive guide on recycling and other waste disposal downtown!
