A rose by any other name…smells fresher with these tips

07/25/2013 in

We may be wilting and withering in the July heat, but the flowers we buy don’t have to. A simple flower arrangement can transform a room, but how do you make it last longer than a day or two? Our friends at City Blossoms have shared five tips to keep your freshly-cut blooms resplendent.

#1: Remove any greenery from the bottom of the stems that will be submerged in the water; this will help keep the water clean.

#2: It’s a good idea to trim a bit from the stems each day or every other day to help the flowers receive a steady flow of nutrients and water; this keeps them vibrant.

#3: Use a very sharp knife to get a clean cut. For thicker stems, you can also use sharp garden shears.

#4: Always use a sparkling, clean vase that has been washed in hot, soapy water and rinsed well.

#5: Besides drawing water from their stems, almost all flowers benefit from a daily mist of water.
