Commercial Waste Zone Phase 4 for Lower Manhattan begins TODAY, Wednesday, April 1 with full implementation by Sunday, May 31. All businesses serviced by a commercial waste carter are required to select a DSNY-authorized private carter for waste collection starting April 1. If a selection is not made, a carter will be assigned by DSNY at the maximum rate, as required by law. You can find a map outlining the Lower Manhattan Commercial Waste Zone here.
Following the passage of a 2019 law, the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has broken the five boroughs into 20 new Commercial Waste Zones. Each zone has three authorized commercial waste carters to hopefully provide businesses with service choices and competitive pricing. In addition to contracts with three authorized carters per zone, DSNY has also established contracts with five carters to operate citywide to pick up containerized waste from compactors and businesses that have loading docks.
Authorized carters to service the Lower Manhattan Zone are as follows:
- Action Carting Environmental Services, Inc. | actioncarting.com | 866-270-9900
- Cogent Waste Solutions, LLC | cogentwaste.com | 718-349-7555
- Waste Connections of New York, Inc. | wasteconnections.com/new-york-city | 212-268-1322
Calculate the maximum amount a carter is permitted to charge you here. Carters must charge their customers less for the collection of recycling and compostable material than they do for the collection of refuse giving businesses an opportunity to save money while helping divert material from landfill. Certain establishments such as non-profits and some professional offices may qualify for no-cost or low-fee DSNY collection services.
