A massive heat wave is descending upon New York City this week, with expected temperatures to climb to 95-100 and humidity bumping up the heat index values as high as 109. These dangerous temps will start on Wednesday and extend into Fourth of July weekend. To keep New Yorkers safe, the city has issued an extreme heat warning and is opening hundreds of free cooling centers across all five boroughs.
There are three cooling centers in Lower Manhattan:
- New Amsterdam Branch Library (9 Murray St.)
- HMH City Hall (older adults only) Older Adult Center (100 Gold St.)
- Battery Park City Library (175 North End Ave.)
Note that high heat is particularly dangerous for people without air conditioning, older adults, people with chronic conditions and those who work outdoors. If you find yourself in need of a cool space, head to a cooling center immediately. Be sure to stay hydrated, wear loose, cool clothing and avoid strenuous activity until the wave passes.
