Are You A Senior Who Needs Your Meals Delivered?

UPDATE, Tuesday, April 14: The city is now transitioning the home-delivery initiative into its GetFoodNYC program. Dial 311 to register. They’re currently working on setting up automatic renewals for seniors.

Since New York City went on pause, the mayor’s office has been trying to make sure that seniors in all five boroughs are getting the meals they need safely delivered to their doors — as the Department for the Aging (DFTA) has a food program that has been trying to transition from group meals in senior centers to free home deliveries.

So if you’re a senior who needs to receive your meals at home and haven’t already joined the program, call Aging Connect at 212-244-6469 or 311 to get signed up.

There have, however, been reports that seniors who signed up for the city’s meal delivery service aren’t yet getting their orders. So if you signed up and nothing’s coming, email Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer’s office.

“It’s clearly been a bumpy transition for DFTA as they switch over to a brand-new home delivered meals model,” Brewer said in a statement, underscoring the importance that this system start working, and fast. “They aren’t getting the food they need to keep themselves nourished and their resistance up.”

The city is aware of the issues with the transition and has been trying to get as many meals to as many seniors as it can. “We anticipated some challenges,” said a department spokesperson, “and have been addressing them.”
