Six Downtown Ideas for Dad This Father’s Day

Six Downtown Ideas for Dad This Father’s Day

Father’s Day is on Sunday, June 16, and if you’re looking to find some ways to celebrate your pops, we’ve got you covered (at least in Lower Manhattan). Here are six gift/activity ideas in the neighborhood to let Dad know you love him.

Dinner and a Show at Alamo Drafthouse or IPIC Fulton

Elevate Dad’s movie experience by taking him to see the latest action film at one of our premium dine-in cinemas. At Alamo Drafthouse (28 Liberty St.), you can bond over bottomless popcorn and beers, then cap the day off with a cocktail and a trip through movie history at the on-site Press Room bar. Or opt for a luxe experience at IPIC Fulton (11 Fulton St.), which offers oversized leather reclining chairs, unlimited popcorn, pillows, blankets and food and cocktail menus.

Hop Aboard the Tall Ship “Wavertree” at the Seaport Museum

Some fathers love boats — those fathers, and perhaps even less overtly nautical fathers, might enjoy visiting the 1885 tall ship “Wavertree,” which is currently docked at the Seaport under the auspices of the South Street Seaport Museum (12 Fulton St.). A General Admission ticket to the museum will get you onboard the 19th century cargo sailing ship, where you can see how officers and crewmembers worked and lived hundreds of years ago. Be sure to set aside some time to see the rest of the museum’s exhibitions, which include an exploration of the South Street port’s role in New York’s success as a thriving urban center, and a popular exhibit digging into the dichotomy between First and Third Class passengers on early 20th century ocean liners.

Shave and a Haircut at the Common Ditch Social

Help Dad look his best on his big Hallmark holiday by booking him an appointment at the Common Ditch Social (74 Broad St.), a chic and trendy barber shop that’s still cozy enough for anyone’s old man to sink into a chair. The shop provides all the traditional services (manicure, hot towel massage, shoe shine) in addition to a fresh and clean cut. You might also consider tacking on a straight-razor shave, beard trim or even a sports pedicure. To set up a time, call 212-406-5896 or enter your information via their site’s contact page.

Cigars and Whiskey

Give Pop a day to flex his vices with a trip to the Barclay-Rex pipe and cigar shop (126 Pearl St.), which has been catering to tobacco lovers since 1910. There, you’ll find premium cigars, hand-made pipes and accessories for purchase; there’s also a public lounge where you two can sample the wares (don’t tell Mom!). Post-puffing, head to Fraunces Tavern’s Dingle Whiskey Bar (54 Pearl St), which boasts a functional fireplace and a global selection of whiskeys. If you’re not sure what to order, ask your bartender for a recommendation or try one of the curated whiskey flights to find your favorite. The bar also has a limited beer and wine menu along with charcuterie and other small bites.

Spa Day and Brews on Governors Island

Fathers need pampering too, and this Father’s Day weekend, QC NY Spa on Governors Island is ready to give the dads all the good stuff. The spa is teaming up with Milan-based grooming company Barberino’s Friday through Sunday to offer complimentary 30-minute barber treatments for all guests who purchase a pass at Grab a couple tickets ranging from Sunset Admission ($130) to Full Day Entrance ($186) each to enjoy wellness experiences like saunas and QC NY’s famed spa pool, then grab dad for an Italian classic shave, facial treatment or quick beard shaping so he’ll leave feeling and looking swell. Post spa, head to Governors Island’s Threes Brewing outpost (517 Clayton Rd.), where you can toast Pop with a tasty beer or two.

Wine and a Flower Bouquet (Wine Not?)

Who says fathers can’t have wine and flowers? Head to Simply Wine (55 Liberty St.), the Corkery (15 Bridge St.) or any one of downtown’s wine shops to grab a bottle of their best red, white or rosé. Then, swing by City Blossoms (62 Trinity Pl.) to shop their summer collection. The colorful blooms are sure to brighten up Dad’s day, even if Mom has to remind him to put them in a vase.
