Kick-Off Endless Summer Fun On Governors Island

By: Caroline De Tino

With warmer days fast approaching, so are the endless activities at Governors Island.

Starting May 1, all Governors Island has to offer will be open to the public every day through October 1. From urban farming to zip-lining and arts programming to educational activities, a world of opportunity will be a short ferry ride away.

Visitors will have the chance to check out Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Arts Center, take in performances during the River to River Festival, and enjoy National Park Service programs that bring the island’s rich history to life.

For those interested in open space, the environment, and nature, this harbor island has a lot to offer. Visitors can check out the Billion Oyster Project’s exhibit that showcases their oyster restoration activities and allows people to build their own oyster reef. Kick off spring with the NYC Holi Hai Festival, bring the kids to Family Fun Day and go back in time with a Jazz Age Lawn Party, Pinknic, NYC Volkswagen Traffic Jam and a WWI History Weekend.

For the first time, the Hills, which provide visitors with a sweeping 360-degree panoramic view of the Harbor, will be open for the full season. And all of this can be explored on foot or by bike. Citi Bike kiosks and Blazing Saddles bike rentals make it easy to get around on two wheels.

Ferries to Governors Island run from the Battery Maritime Building at 10 South Street in Lower Manhattan everyday and will also run from Brooklyn Bridge Park on the weekend, Labor Day and Memorial Day. For the month of May, all Brooklyn ferries will depart from Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1. Round trip tickets on weekdays and weekends are $2 and all morning ferries on Saturdays and Sundays are free.

Weekday hours are 10 AM to 6 PM and from 10 AM to 7 PM on weekends, Memorial Day, and Labor Day.
