We’ve entered the dog days of summer, those characterized by hot weather, muggy air and a general distaste for any sort of movement whatsoever. Still, sitting on a couch all day gets tiring, too, which is all the more reason to head to Governors Island, where you can spend time lounging in style in a hammock.
The island’s Hammock Grove is conveniently located between the food trucks at Liggett Terrace and the Play Fields. When you’re tuckered out from kicking a soccer ball or inhaling a personal pizza or simply breathing (a tiring activity), you can nap in one of the Grove’s dozens of red woven hammocks. Between the grass, the sky and the trees, it’s like being in a peaceful backyard — which is apt, since we in Lower Manhattan think of Governors Island as our own personal backyard.
You can access Governors Island via the Ferry at the Battery Maritime Building; visit their website for details. Note that there’s little shade on the island, so be sure to bring a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle.
