LM Live Panel: Crime, Corruption and the Evolution of New York’s Underworld

LM Live Panel: Crime, Corruption and the Evolution of New York’s Underworld

In the early 1900s, crime wasn’t just a problem in New York City — it was part of its identity. Waves of immigration gave rise to powerful crime syndicates, particularly in the crowded streets of the Lower East Side. In his latest book, “The Incorruptibles,” author Dan Slater uncovers the true story of a secretive vice squad formed by affluent uptowners to combat this rising tide of corruption only to unintentionally help usher in a new era of organized crime.

On March 26, join the Downtown Alliance at the Down Town Association (60 Pine St.) for a discussion featuring Slater and Richard Price, the acclaimed novelist and screenwriter behind “Clockers,” “Lush Life” and HBO’s “The Wire.” Known for his gritty, immersive portrayals of urban crime and law enforcement, Price brings a unique perspective on how the themes of “The Incorruptibles” — power, corruption and reform — echo throughout New York’s history. Together, Slater and Price will explore how political machines, police corruption and immigrant crime syndicates shaped the city’s underworld, tracing patterns that continue to resonate today. The conversation will be moderated by Hell Gate co-publisher and local journalist Max Rivlin-Nadler.

Post-discussion, join us for a reception with light refreshments, with books by both authors available for purchase. This event is perfect for anyone interested in the evolution of law enforcement or the way crime has shaped New York’s identity. The event runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and is free to attend; register here
