Power, Persuasion and “Julius Caesar” Will Transform Castle Clinton This Summer
May 20, 2026
This summer, New York Classical Theatre brings its production of “The Tragedy of Julius Caesar” downtown from June 30 to July 5. Directed and adapted by Stephen Burdman, with production design by Garvin Hastings, the performance will come to life as it turns Battery Park and Castle Clinton into the world of the play. Performances will also take place in Central Park, June 2 through June 21, and Carl Schurz Park, June 23 through the 28.
“The Tragedy of Julius Caesar” explores the fragile line between loyalty, ambition, patriotism and betrayal. Shakespeare tells the story of a group of senators who try to save their republic from tyranny by stopping a powerful leader. Their actions instead spark fractured alliances, public outrage and chaos. This examination of power, persuasion and responsibility make this play a relevant watch for audiences today.
Few Shakespeare plays feel as applicable today as “Julius Caesar,” which is why New York Classical Theater is partnering with “Civics is Sexy,” a nonpartisan organization that promotes civic education by blending it with the arts. With their program “Rome to Right Now,” they will host a voter education and registration booth, activities and a pre-show conversation about the show’s enduring questions relating to power, democratic fragility and responsibility.
Beyond the performances, there is a variety of programming for everyone, including Family Night at the Battery outside Castle Clinton, which will take place July. All performances and programming are free and open to the public. While walk-up participants are welcome on a first-come, first-serve basis, register here to reserve your spot and access the Digital Playbill. Whether you’re a long-time Shakespeare lover or simply looking for a unique summer night out, this immersive production is one you won’t want to miss.
