When the Woolworth Building first opened in 1913, it represented an unprecedented feat of engineering and architectural prowess. Gilded Age tycoon Frank W. Woolworth had commissioned architect Cass Gilbert to design a skyscraper that fused Gothic grandeur with cutting-edge technology, like electricity, steam-powered heating, and Otis elevators — and Gilbert delivered. Soaring nearly 800 feet, it was the tallest building in the world and the most expensive office tower ever built at the time. Even after the Woolworth Building became eclipsed by taller feats, its reputation as an architectural marvel held, and throughout its 113-year history, it has been home to many notable tenants, including Nikola Tesla, Columbia Records and Fordham University. Now, the building hailed as the “Cathedral of Commerce” is entering a bold new era — reimagined as a catalyst for culture where arts, design, innovation and community converge.
On January 28, join the Downtown Alliance and Untapped New York for a special event that will explore the past, present and future of the Woolworth Building. Take in the views from the building’s exclusive 26th floor and learn about the history, impact and evolution of this legendary landmark from leading voices in New York City’s cultural and architectural spheres. Speakers include Carol Willis, founder and director of the Skyscraper Museum; Gregg Pasquarelli, founding principal at SHoP Architecture; Ron Castellano, founder of Studio Castellano and Nate Rogers, partner at Beyer Blinder Belle Architects.
In addition to the dynamic panel discussion, you’ll have a chance to explore an interactive art installation created by Untapped New York’s artist-in-residence, Aaron Asis, which features historical images and actual pieces of the Woolworth Building facade. Enjoy complimentary wine, soft drinks and light fare while you browse. Can’t get enough of the Woolworth Building? Join a VIP tour of the breathtaking lobby before or after the reception with official Woolworth tour guide Bob Gelber.
