The World Cup final is almost here! The long-awaited July 19 game — which will take place across the river at MetLife Stadium — won’t feature the USA, after a round-of-16 performance against Belgium of which we do not speak in polite company. But it will feature two of the best teams in the world, and for those of us who didn’t get tickets to catch the match IRL, it will be projected live onto a very large screen on Governors Island.
The People’s Final is a World Cup final watch party presented jointly by the Trust for Governors Island and the New York City Mayor’s Office. The party will be on July 19 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., and as well as the big game on the big screen, it’ll feature soccer clinics and open play opportunities, live DJs, family-centered activities and international food vendors highlighting the diverse heritage of New York City, along with more event partners and activities TBC.
You can get to Governors Island on the ferry, which leaves from Battery Maritime Building at 10 South St. Full details, schedules and ticketing information are available via the island’s website. The NYC ferry service also stops at the island; details and tickets are available here.
