Downtown has been changing

Managing the Downtown-Lower Manhattan Business Improvement District (BID), the Downtown Alliance is your first and best business resource. Whether you’re dreaming of a grand opening or big-time growth, we’re here to help in more ways than one.

Early on in “She-Wolves: The Untold History of Women on Wall Street,” author and historian Paulina Bren sets the scene of a consequential spring day in 1762. In it, 24 people — brokers and merchants, men of means — gather under a buttonwood tree outside 68 Wall St. Here, they sign a document outlining rules for trading stocks: de facto birthing the New York Stock Exchange and establishing Lower Manhattan, as Bren writes, “as the beating heart of American capitalism.”The men who wrote and signed the Buttonwood Agreement, for all of their ambition and belief in the great potential for the future, simply could not conceive of the idea that women would one day engage in this financial world they had created. Centuries later, Muriel “Mickie” Siebert, the first woman to own a seat on the NYSE, would discover this truth in a frank, telling way: on the members’ luncheon floor of the exchange, there was no women’s restroom. Before her, there was never a need for one. “She-Wolves” tells the stories of female pioneers in a man’s world, tracing the footprint of women on the trading floor. From the 19th-century clairvoyant sisters who became the first female stockbrokers, to Siebert earning her seat on the exchange in 1967, to the shoulder pad-clad powerplayers of the ‘80s, Bren lets these oft overlooked women show their teeth. Ahead of our November 21 LM Live event with Siebert Financial, we talked to the author about her book. Just in time for the weekend, we present to you: The Downtown Bar Matrix 🍹🌀From local haunts to post-work watering holes to cocktail lounges that rank among the best in the world, Lower Manhattan is the privileged home to dozens of bars. We split the downtown drinking scene into four quadrants —each a mini guide for helping you choose where to go for your next round. If you’re looking for libations outside of the norm, move left to right on the Classic Fare (read: beer, wine and tried-and-true cocktails) / Mixology axis. And if you start at the top of the Swanky / Casual line, you’ll find yourself sipping spirits 60+ floors above the city, until you work your way down to frill-free favorites situated at sea level. Wherever you end up, have fun, drink responsibly and tip your bartender! Cheers 🍻

Ghost Adventures: Lower Manhattan edition 👻 We bought a (super scientific, very accurate) EMF reader online and tested it out on some notoriously haunted spots in the neighborhood, including Trinity Church, Fraunces Tavern and our co-worker Ben’s office. What we discovered was spine-chilling (not really). Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween! It’s a scary-beautiful day to celebrate downtown 🎃👻🌉
