Snowstorm Expected To Hit Tri-State Area: Guidance For Businesses Downtown

Stock up on your groceries and cocoa mix now: a winter storm appears to be headed our way early next week. News reports suggest this week’s bitter temperature is a prelude to a significant snowy blast, with a 40% chance of six to 10 inches of snowfall for parts of the Tri-State area from Sunday night to Tuesday, according to Accuweather.

If you’re a business owner Downtown, make sure you clear a path that is at least four feet wide and remove snow from fire hydrants, catch basins and sidewalk corner ramps without pushing the snow into the street.

Based on when the snowfall ends, you will need to adhere to the following:

7 a.m. – 4:59 p.m. You have four hours to shovel

5 p.m.  – 8:59 p.m. You have 14 hours to shovel

9 p.m. – 6:59 a.m. you have until 11 a.m. the next day to shovel

You can find out more information here.

If you are a restaurant participating in Open Streets, you will need to make sure your business is using snow sticks to increase visibility and prepare to secure, consolidate or remove items when a Winter Operations Advisory or Snow Alert is issued. Find out more information on specific requirements for these alerts here.

Property owners are responsible for keeping clear paths in front of their own buildings. Please don’t push snow onto the street or sidewalks.

Post-storm, the Downtown Alliance’s operations team will be clearing bus stops, fire hydrants, all corner caps, plaza surfaces and crosswalks so you’ll be able to walk through the neighborhood easily. Stay safe and warm, everyone!
