Close Out Summer With A Powerful Dance Series On Governors Island

The air is cooling off, the sun is setting earlier, school supplies are getting snatched up at Target — summer is for sure starting to wind down. Luckily, you can still get in some of Governors Island’s summer programming before the winds change for real. Take, for instance, Uptown Pops, a dance series hosted by the West Harlem Art Fund and Visual Muze. On August 22, you can catch “Untitled Girl Narrative,” a three-act dance musical work-in-progress by director and choreographer Katherine Pettit of Katherine Pettit Creative about three unnamed girls navigating childhood and adolescence in the contemporary United States.

The piece intends to depict the BIPOC female-identifying queer experience. “KPC continues to create platforms that center and celebrate LGBTQ+ youth, in particular the Black and Brown community, throughout the COVID-19 global pandemic,” Pettit said in a statement. “Now more than ever we believe keeping people connected is of the utmost importance.”

The performance will take place at Governors Island’s Nolan Park at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.; if you can’t make it to the island that day, there’ll also be a special performance in Castle Williams on August 29.
