Toot! Toot! NYC Subway Ridership Up 33% In Lower Manhattan

With the slow but steady return to the office and kids back in school, it’s no coincidence that New York City is seeing positive increases in subway commuter activity. In a recent ridership report, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority posted record-setting numbers, with weekday subway ridership hitting 3.73 million in late October.

Straphangers are once again using public transit and moving around the city at a clip that hasn’t been seen since the pandemic began.

Lower Manhattan alone saw a 33% spike in between the second and third quarters of 2021.

Also south of Chambers Street, the PATH had a 30% spike in riders and all adjacent MTA stations to the World Trade Center complex saw the fastest jump in riders from Q2 to Q3. This was likely on account of tourism and activities surrounding the 20th anniversary of September 11.

Since March, all Lower Manhattan subway stations have seen an 85% increase in straphangers.
