Now’s Your Chance to Explore Ancient Chinese Caves Without Leaving Town

Spelunk some of the world’s most famous caves all while remaining in the cozy confines of Lower Manhattan.

On October 25, the China Institute (40 Rector Street) is hosting an event that lets participants feel like they’re exploring the Mogao Caves, ancient sites in a border town along the Silk Road that were built over the course of a thousand years.

Located in northwest China, the caves contain the largest and best preserved trove of Buddhist art in the world. The event will feature art historian Wu Hung from the University of Chicago and NYU’s world-art professor Shen Hsueh-man. The pair will discuss the caves as physical and historical sites that can be entered and understood through the five senses. They’ll offer a perspective that focuses on the actual people who built and used the caves.

General admission tickets cost $12.41, reserve your space and find more information here.
