Chagall Show at Hall des Lumières Brings a Piece of Paris to New York
Paris might be having some pest control problems right now, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the City of Lights from the relative safety of our own city (for now). The latest exhibition at Hall des Lumières is a mesmerizing digital celebration of the prolific modernist painter Marc Chagall (1887-1985), using 130 large-format projectors and a spatialized sound system to showcase Chagall’s entire career, spanning almost an entire century from the early 1900s to his death in 1985.
The exhibition, titled “Chagall, Paris – New York,” highlights the important role the two modern art capitals played in steering the artist’s career. Chagall’s works are projected onto the floor and walls of the 28,000-square-foot space (once home to the Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank) and complemented with excerpts of Chagall’s musical inspirations, including classical, klezmer and jazz. The result is an immersive experience that surrounds you with color and music.
Two supplementary exhibitions are also included in your ticket: “Kandinsky, The Odyssey of Abstraction” envelops the visitor in the mystical abstract world of Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), with an accompanying soundtrack featuring music by Vivaldi and Bowie. “Infinite Horizons” is a contemporary exhibition by Paris-based creative company HKI-Hellohikimori that propels the visitor through a multitude of seemingly-infinite natural landscapes, defying the laws of perspective.
Tickets, which can be booked via the exhibition’s website, are currently available at an exclusive opening rate of $28. Other price tiers are available for youth, families, students and seniors.
