Where to Celebrate Diwali in Lower Manhattan

Known for its celebratory music, dance, beautiful decorations and delicious food, Diwali symbolizes “victory of light over darkness.” It’s the most important holiday of the year in Hinduism and the most celebrated festival in India. This year, Diwali takes place on Sunday, November 12, and there are several events happening in the neighborhood this weekend where you can take part in the festivities.

This Friday, November 10, Seaport Square (between Piers 16 and 17) will be illuminated with performances, dance workshops and traditional art activities aboard the 1885 tall ship Wavertree. Decorate your own diya lamp and float it in one of the pools set up on the square. Don’t leave without trying some beautiful Indian food and mithai (sweets) from TAGMO and other local vendors. Co-hosted by the Seaport and the Culture Tree, the celebration will run from 3 to 6 p.m. and is free with RSVP.

If, understandably, food is your highest priority during Diwali, TAGMO (226 Front St.) is offering a Diwali prix fixe dinner series at their physical store. Chef Surbhi Sahni has created a special menu for the series inspired by her and her partner’s favorite childhood flavors from Punjab and Bengal. Dinners will be served every night this week through Sunday, November 12. Tickets are $85 and can be booked online.
