Upcoming Events

April 1: New York on Film: “12 Angry Men” followed by a conversation with Josh Dubin and Derrick Hamilton

Sidney Lumet’s “12 Angry Men” (1957) is a cinematic masterpiece that delves into the complexities of justice, morality, and the power of the jury system. Unfolding almost entirely within the confines of a jury room in the New York County Courthouse, the film follows 12 jurors tasked with deciding the fate of a young man accused of murder. Tensions rise as the diverse group of jurors navigates personal biases, preconceptions, and moral dilemmas, forcing them to confront the complexities of justice. As the deliberations intensify, the film explores themes of prejudice, reasonable doubt, and the power of individual conviction in the pursuit of truth.

On Monday, April 1, join the Downtown Alliance for a special screening of “12 Angry Men” followed by a conversation with Josh Dubin, executive director of the Perlmutter Center for Legal Justice at Cardozo Law School and president of Dubin Research and Consulting, Inc., a Manhattan-based consulting firm that specializes in jury selection and trial strategy for complex civil and criminal matters. Dubin will speak with Derrick Hamilton, Deputy Director of the Perlmutter Center for Legal Justice at Cardozo Law School and an expert in wrongful conviction.

Dubin and Hamilton will explore the enduring relevance of the film and its profound impact on our understanding of the jury’s role in preventing wrongful convictions. They will also draw back the curtain on the importance of jury selection in legal cases and examine critical issues within our legal system.

Tickets are $10 and include popcorn and a beverage. All proceeds will be donated to the Perlmutter Center for Legal Justice at Cardozo Law School.
