Come Out Of The Cold In Lower Manhattan This Winter

Come Out Of The Cold In Lower Manhattan This Winter

By: Kristin Heise

The shortest month of the year can be brutal to face regardless of one’s efforts to bundle up or absorb extra Vitamin D. And while the desire to hibernate until mid-April is strong within all who experience NYC winters, we encourage you to fight the temptation, strap on your boots and enjoy this month’s creative and cultural offerings.

From classic movie sing-alongs to laughter-filled comedy specials, Lower Manhattan boasts an amazing variety of local indoor activities and live performances this February. Below are a few of our favorite finds this month, but you can find many more that are added daily on the Downtown NYC’s official Events calendar.

Silent Films / Live Music at Brookfield Place’s Winter Garden
Jan. 30 – Feb. 1 @ 7:30p
Skip the mid-week commute cacophony and relax with live music harmonies set to classic black and white silent films from the 1920s! The three-day event, curated by longtime Radio WNYC host and music aficionado John Schaefer, is free to enjoy and features a different film and genre every evening (Slapstick! Horror! Crime-heist!), so you’ll find a crowd-pleaser AND increase your movie trivia knowledge.

Lunar New Year 2019 at Brookfield Place’s Winter Garden
Feb. 9 @ 2:00-3:15p
Those seeking extra luck and happiness in the Year of the Pig should visit the Winter Garden for a dynamic Lion Parade hosted by the New York Chinese Cultural Center! And if you spend $200 or more at Brookfield Place stores, you may be rewarded with a lucky red envelope containing extra prizes and a BFPL gift card!

Mary Poppins Sing-Along at Schimmel Center
Feb. 10 @ 3p
Chim-chimeny, Chim-chimeny, chim-chim-cher-ee, to sing loud in public is where you should be. Bring the kids, invite the friends, and get a big dose of nostalgia with a delightful Disney sing-along to the original Mary Poppins film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke! Pre-screening activities will begin at 3PM and include games, prizes and even a meet-and-greet with the practically perfect nanny herself! The movie will commence at 4PM and ticket prices start at $20.

An Evening with Ronny Chieng and Dulcé Sloan at Schimmel Center
Feb. 14 @ 7:30p
Whether you’re single or taken or somewhere in between, you should commit yourself to a night of genuine laughter and witty banter with Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and late show veterans Ronny Chieng and Dulcé Sloan. Seating prices start at $19.

Best Brews of New York at Brookfield Place’s Winter Garden
Thursdays from Feb. 21-Mar. 14 @ 4-9p
New York’s breweries transform the Winter (Bier)garten into a hoppy playground of pale ales and stout flavor as they compete for the title of Best Brew. Drink responsibly and sample recklessly from home state brew alchemists including Southern Tier Brewing Company, Blue Point Brewing Company, Bronx Brewing, Sixpoint Brewery and more!

New Shanghai Circus
Feb. 24 @ 4p
Gravity defying acts are #NBD to the outstanding tumblers, contortionists and athletes in this two-hour show of incredible skill. It will be a balancing act for you not to shout “ooh / aah / wow!” every few minutes, but we know you’re up to the entertaining challenge. General admission prices start at $29, and children tickets (for ages 12 & under) start at $20.

Curling & Game Night at Pier 17
Tuesday nights all winter
We felt justified in listing this nyc winter outing because there are plenty of cozy, indoor seats surrounding the rooftop skating rink. We’re also excited to (finally!) learn how to curl on the rooftop at Pier 17 Winterland, located on the eastern edge of the Seaport District. Coaching sessions are available for all ages by reservation, or you can hang out on and off the ice playing casual winter games like cornhole, ice pong and ice painting.
