The Artist at Work: James Hsieh’s New In-Progress Piece at 28 Liberty

Next time you’re heading to or from the 2,3 train via the underground 28 Liberty corridor (a great cold-weather hack!), take a minute to check out a new large-format installation by local artist James Hsieh.

The installation, sponsored by Fosun and Art on the Ave, features a hand-painted mural on fiber art, designed to captivate viewers with its intricate detail. The piece currently appears unfinished, and visitors will be able to watch Hsieh’s creative process in real time as he transforms the two-dimensional drawing into a vibrant, colorful, multidimensional piece.

Hsieh previously jazzed up 28 Liberty with the 2023 installation “No Place I’d Rather Be,” another Art on the Ave-sponsored project. That installation, a collection of colorful artworks, evoked Hsieh’s childhood interest in nature’s wild diversity.

You can see the new piece — and Hsieh working on it — in the corridor to the Wall Street Station of 2 & 3 subway line adjacent to the Fosun Plaza concourse.
