The Word Is Out: Downtown’s Coolest Coffee Hall Houses a Secret Immersive Production

Back in March, we announced the opening of Conwell Coffee Hall, a gorgeous new caffeine hub housed in a former bank lobby at 6 Hanover St. It felt, as we said, like a “place where magic just might happen” — and we weren’t just wowed by the Art Deco details. Indeed, we can now reveal that Conwell Coffee Hall is actually part of “Life and Trust,” a theatrical production from Emursive Productions, the team behind “Sleep No More.”

Eagle-eyed Conwell Coffee Hall visitors may have spotted a plaque by the hall’s entrance that spins the tale of J.G. Conwell, the suspiciously fortunate former chairman of the Life and Trust Bank who died under mysterious circumstances. If you thought his story sounded a tad fantastic, Conwell is actually the focus of the production, which takes you on an “indoor promenade walk” through his skyscraper, Conwell Tower.

Emursive has kept pretty tight-lipped on details, but they’ve dropped a lot of hints, both on Conwell Coffee Hall’s website and the official Life and Trust page. The name of the bank is a reference to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s “Faust,” (“As soon as you trust yourself, you will know how to live,”) a tragic play about a man who makes a pact with the devil in exchange for success. It’s also worth noting Conwell Coffee Hall’s logo incorporates the image of the devil, so there’s a good chance there’s going to be some soul-selling involved in the show. Conwell Coffee Hall itself has a number of other “Life and Trust”-related Easter eggs — take a long look at the Diego Rivera-esque mural behind the bank teller counter, for instance — if you want to do a little exploring before purchasing tickets to the full experience. (Plus, the food and drinks are delicious!)

There are a limited number of tickets available for purchase, with prices in the $160 to $190 range, approximately. Purchase your spot today, and be ready to embark on a successful journey.
