Find Out Where the Bodies Are Buried in This “Life & Death” Walking Tour
Here’s the thing about a city as old, historic and formerly seedy as New York: there’re bodies buried everywhere.
Find out just how many bodies — and where they’re interred under Lower Manhattan — on the upcoming ”Life & Death in Manhattan” walking tour running on Saturdays through August.
The 2.45-hour tour of Lower Manhattan, Tribeca and Chinatown will take you through the physical past of the city. You’ll learn about Indigenous Lenape burial sites, the New Amsterdam fight over burial space and British prisons for American patriots during the Revolutionary War. The tour will cover Manhattan’s riots, epidemics and crucial changes in legislation that affected burials, and participants can look out at the islands in New York Harbor to learn about forgotten burial grounds, along with a Manhattan jail and a busy funeral industry street.
The tour is organized by Purefinder, a tour company created by author and journalist K. Krombie; tours run four times on Saturdays throughout the month starting at 10:30 a.m. Buy tickets here.
